Painting and Furnishing Safe Houses in Oregon - The Gospel in Action
Rachel Werner, the Children Ministeries Coordinator at Evergreen Church in Beaverton, who works under my direction, discovered that our county manages several safe houses for women. She also discovered that many of the interiors of these houses looked and felt more like prisons than homes and so she has organized our teens to paint and to furnish bedrooms with new linens and other warming features. During Sunday morning announcements, as Rachel described the opportunity, I was emotionally stirred, a rarity for me during the delivery of announcements! My daughter joined the painting crew, and I can not begin to express the gratitude that I feel for her opportunity to serve in the name of Jesus, who spent much of his time with the hurting and marginalized members of his community.
This project is one small part of a growing movement through out our nation and world, a movement of Christians adorning the gospel with acts of mercy and kindness. The caricature of a cold, unconcerned Church is no longer valid. While there may be exceptions and while we can recite atrocities done under the banner of Christ, countless, daily acts of love are rendered in the name of Christ. In the second half of the 20th century, much of this kingdom work was accomplished through mission agencies working alongside the church. But in the 21st century more and more of this work has been taken up by the organization of the church.
In the early years of the 20th century, an unfortunate divide occurred in the church. A large portion of the “mainline church” abandoned the gospel message and exclusively offered deeds of social kindness and mercy. Mission agencies instructed their missionaries to refrain from preaching an exclusive Gospel, one way unto salvation and new life through Jesus Christ. They were instructed to give beans and rice to the hungry, medical care to the infirmed but to stop short of proclaiming the gospel. In reaction, the evangelical church, spurred by the Fundamentalist movement, proclaimed the gospel but failed to serve rice, beans and medical care. By the power and enlightenment of the Holy Spirit, this has changed. We are now hard pressed to find a major mission agency or a Gospel preaching church that does not contribute to the relieving of social and material needs in the communities to which they proclaim the gospel.

Hello do you have a list of some of the safe houses? I have a relatives that needs one for about 6 months. Quiet adult, that needs a place to sleep, until they can fix all arrangements for new safe other accomodations. Please let me know thank you very much for helping people.

We have A Good Team of Youth 15 member, they are all involved Tracts distributions, street preaching and they are visit to some remote villages and proclaim the God’s words and distribute the free tracts and new testaments. So we need some more Gospel tracts and Library material to my area people spiritual help. Kindly consider my request and send the above material to me. We win some souls here through these materials.
